Painted Wolf Drum

I started by hand-cutting the head and lacing out of a deer rawhide and making the drum with a 10″ deodar cedar frame. The background is mottled green, gray and white, and on this field I painted an Arctic wolf. The paint’s been coasted with several layers of sealant to help protect it. As an additional accent, I tied a partial Alaskan wolf tail to the underside of the drum with braided secondhand yarn.

The beater is made from a thick hardwood dowel, painted black with acrylics, and wrapped with black deerskin. The head of the beater is padded and also wrapped in deerskin. Finally, I wrapped the neck of the beater in a scrap of wolf fur left from another project.
