$35 – available for purchase on Etsy

I was at a secondhand shop recently and saw this framed black and white print of a moose by Alaskan artist Howard Macallister. The frame was nothing fancy, just plain black plastic with a pressed paper backing and stand. But I found the art inside compelling, and wanted to incorporate it into a piece of my own.

I painted the print with washes of diluted acrylic paint in green and brown, and added a piece of real moose hide from vintage taxidermy scrap over the moose’s shoulder. I painted the frame in green and brown with just a bit of the original black showing here and there, and with the worn silver center left largely intact. I added a small twig to the frame where the tree in the print ended, and two bits of dried moss to mirror the greenery the moose stands in.
