A Weekend At the Coast

July 2014
Price: $130 – available for purchase on Etsy

It’s summer, and that means it’s time for a trip to the beach! Whether your local beach is along a river, lake, or a mighty ocean, you’ll find reminders of these special in-between places with this carefully curated collection of natural history specimens and human artifacts. Each one represents some element of a coastal experience, whether that’s combing the beach for natural treasures, swimming in clear, cooling waters, or playing tourist in shops in little towns.

These items rest within the niches of this wooden mini-cabinet–which may be set on a shelf or hung on a wall, and measures 11 1/2″ x 8 3/4″ x 1 3/4″. Each one has been legally collected by me or another collector, obtained from secondhand sources, or hand-crafted as a stand-in for rarer things. Fossils and mineral specimens share space with hide, bone and shell, while human artifacts both practical and decorative remind us of our place in these ecosystems–and the responsibility we have to protect them.

The entire collection includes:

1. Replica Western Gull Egg in Nest (miniature)
2. River Otter Fur
3. Nylon Rope
4. Salmon Jaw Bone
5. Blue Mussel Shell
6. Western Hemlock Cone
7. Fossil Sponge
8. Water-worn Coral
9. Sand
10. Pacific Ocean Water
11. Souvenir Spoon
12. Oregon Shore Crab
13. Dolomite
14. Snakeskin Agate

To help you navigate your collection, I’ve written a booklet that explains what each specimen is and a little about what makes it special. This is no copy-and-paste of internet articles; it is a culmination of careful research and experience. You will receive a copy of this booklet with your collection at no additional cost. Additional copies may be purchased at https://www.etsy.com/listing/196491205/a-weekend-at-the-coast-by-lupa

Anyone can toss a few random natural items in a box and call it a “cabinet of curiosities”. I prefer to create a more complete, themed collection with an educational intent in line with the original wunderkammern. Uniquely among wunderkammer artisans, I enhance each collection by writing a guidebook for it, detailing the purpose behind the collection and what makes each piece in it special. If you would like a custom collection curated for you, complete with informational booklet, please contact me.
